If you are of sane mind, you definitely answered “NO” to all of the above questions.  But nonetheless you unknowingly risk your health and the health of your family by actually behaving as if you answered “YES” to all of the above questions.

 

Assuming the suspense doesn’t kill you, the product we are about to talk about may – toothpaste.

 

Yes, that is correct – toothpaste.  First, before getting into this e-mail, go to your sink and read the back of your toothpaste tube.  If it is a common shelf brand, the poison warnings should be enough to have you heave the tube in the trash.  If that isn’t enough to convince you then read on.

 

By the way, just so you know up front, Botanical Buffet is about to offer a healthy, natural prebiotic alternative to the oral poisons we so actively use and promote.  So the attempt of this e-mail is to inform and educate rather than to scare.

 

FACT:  Many popular toothpastes and mouthwashes contain harmful ingredients, made up of tiny molecules that penetrate through the tissue of your mouth, enter the blood stream, and build up in the liver, kidneys, heart and other organ tissues.

 

First, let’s discuss Sodium Fluoride which is one of the main ingredients in most every toothpaste…and, oh yes, rat and cockroach poison.

 

Most people know that toothpaste and many mouth rinses contain fluoride because that’s what dentists have recommended for years to prevent cavities.  What you probably didn’t know is that most popular toothpastes contain enough fluoride in four ounces to kill a child within a few hours.

 

In children, minimal ingestion of sodium fluoride causes nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Large doses of this known carcinogen can cause muscular weakness and paralysis, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure.  If that isn’t enough, sodium fluoride is a key ingredient in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs as well as in Sarin Nerve Gas.  Precisely why your toothpaste tube is so adamant about keeping the product away from children!

 

But according to dentists Sodium Fluoride prevents tooth decay so why not add it to toothpaste?  Stop, there.  Surprisingly, there is plenty of contradictory scientific evidence demonstrating that fluoride does NOT reduce cavities and actually now linking fluoride to tooth and gum deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions and thousands of unnecessary deaths each year from cancer.

 

Second, almost every toothpaste brand contains an ingredient that as a chemist I find almost impossible to accept - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).  Simply because SLS creates foaming, it is added to toothpastes to give the impression that the toothpaste is working.  In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as car wash soaps, floor cleaners and engine degreasers.

 

While that might give you pause for thought, the real problem is that SLS is extremely corrosive and harmful to living tissue.  Research laboratories actually use it to irritate skin on test subject animals and humans so they may test the effectiveness of healing agents.

 

The journal of the American College of Toxicology reports that SLS can be retained in the eye, brain, heart, and liver with harmfullong-term health effects.

 

Third, most toothpastes contain the ever popular chemical pesticide, Triclosan.  Triclosan is included in toothpaste formulations as an antibacterial.  Can it kill some negative oral bacteria?  Sure, while killing seven times as many beneficial bacteria as well.

 

While major brand companies that manufacture products containing triclosan claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a dangerous pesticide, giving it high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk.  Triclosan is a chlorophenol, which is a class of chemicals that is suspected of causing cancer in humans. On contact, phenols can cause a variety of tissue irritation.  Worse, taken internally, even in small amounts, phenols such as this can lead to circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and death.

 

If that is scary enough to keep it out of loved ones mouths, chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides like Triclosan can be stored in body fat, potentially accumulating to toxic levels. Long term, repeated  exposure can damage virtually every important organ, suppress the immune system, and cause hormonal disruption, sterility, paralysis and brain hemorrhages.

 

Fourth, most toothpastes try to look pretty by adding FD&C Blue Dye # 1 & 2.  Yummy!  This is just like eating a mouthful of crude oil as these dyes are synthesized from petroleum.  Even if toothpaste is not swallowed, these dyes can be absorbed within seconds through the skin inside the lips or through the mucous membrane in the mouth.  But seriously, how can you brush your teeth without swallowing some toothpaste?

 

Recent studies indicate that FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 can trigger a wide number of behavioral, learning, and health problems including severe allergic reactions, asthma, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness, lack of focus, and even cancer.

 

Fifth, most brand name toothpastes contain Hydrated Silica as a tooth whitener.  Hydrated silica, is actually primarily used as an abrasive compound as it is made from a crystallized compound found in sand, quartz, and flint rock.  The simple fact is that abrasive compounds are about the worst thing that you can do for health of a tooth.  Here’s why.  Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus contained in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization.

 

You should no more clean a tooth with hydrated silica then you would clean a glass window with a piece of rough sandpaper.  There is an abrasive index for toothpastes called the RDA Index. The higher the value, the more abrasive the product is. At or below around 50 may be an acceptable balance between benefit of removing plaque from a tooth and damage due to abrasion.  Over 50 and it’s just a matter of how quickly the loss of tooth structure occurs based on the RDA and the number of brushes that occur.   Most common brand toothpastes register RDA numbers between 150 and 200.

 

Sixth, most toothpastes contain glycerine   Glycerine coats the tooth and completely halts the re-enamelization  process.   Worse, Glycerine is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off the surface of a tooth.  Use a product containing glycerine once a month and your teeth may never re-mineralize again.

 

Seventh, taken as a group, the ingredients in almost all common toothpastes increase acid wear on teeth and gums.  Acidic saliva erodes and de-mineralizes tooth enamel; causing cavities and increased heat and cold sensitivity.

Cell phone radiation protects against and  reverses Alzheimer’s disease in animal  model While evidence linking cell phone use to an increased risk of brain tumors remains  inconclusive, a new study published on January 6, 2010 in the Journal of Alzheimer's  Disease reveals the unexpected finding by researchers at the University of South  Florida that exposure to electromagnetic waves generated by cell phones prevented and  even reversed Alzheimer’s disease symptoms in a mouse model. Gary Arendash, PhD of USF’s the Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and his  associates tested the effects of the electromagnetic field generated by standard cell phone  use on 96 mice, some of which had been genetically modified to develop the amyloid  beta plaques and memory problems characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease in humans. The  animals were housed in cages surrounding an antenna that generated a cell phone signal  during two one hour periods per day for seven to nine months. Mice bred to develop  Alzheimer’s disease exposed to the electromagnetic field from young adulthood performed  as well on memory and cognitive ability skills as normal older mice. And, in the control  mice, months of exposure improved memory to  greater than normal levels. When older mice already showing cognitive dysfunction were exposed to the waves, their  impairment was reversed. Examination of the animals’ brains revealed that amyloid beta  deposits, which form harmful plaques in Alzheimer’s disease, had been eliminated. The  researchers suggest that the small increase in brain temperature observed in the Alzheimer’s  mice could be responsible for the finding, by causing the substance to be released from brain  cells. "It surprised us to find that cell phone exposure, begun in early adulthood, protects the  memory of mice otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's symptoms," Dr Arendash  remarked. "It was even more astonishing that the electromagnetic waves generated by cell  phones actually reversed memory impairment in old Alzheimer's mice." "Since we selected electromagnetic parameters that were identical to human cell phone use  and tested mice in a task closely analogous to a human memory test, we believe our findings  could have considerable relevance to humans," he added. "Our study provides evidence that long-term cell phone use is not harmful to brain,"  concluded study coauthor Chuanhai Cao, PhD. "To the contrary, the electromagnetic waves  emitted by cell phones could actually improve normal memory and be an effective therapy  against memory impairment." "If we can determine the best set of electromagnetic parameters to effectively prevent beta- amyloid aggregation and remove pre-existing beta amyloid deposits from the brain, this  technology could be quickly translated to human benefit against AD," he noted. "Since  production and aggregation of ß-amyloid occurs in traumatic brain injury, particularly in  soldiers during war, the therapeutic impact of our findings may extend beyond Alzheimer's  disease." "It will take some time to determine the exact mechanisms involved in these beneficial  memory effects," Dr Arendash predicted. "One thing is clear, however - the cognitive benefits  of long-term electromagnetic exposure are real, because we saw them in both protection- and  treatment-based experiments involving Alzheimer's mice, as well as in normal mice." Alzheimer's disease Researchers are quietly making amazing discoveries about the nature of  Alzheimer's disease that may soon redefine the way we view—and treat—this  dreaded condition. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by two key abnormalities:  amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid plaques are clumps of a  protein known as beta-amyloid. These plaques are found in the tissue between  nerve cells in the brain and in degenerating pieces of neurons. Oxidative stress is a very important factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.  Antioxidant supplements help block the oxidative process. According to one  researcher: "Beta-amyloid is aggregated and produces more free radicals in the  presence of free radicals; beta-amyloid toxicity is eliminated by free radical  scavengers" (Grundman M 2000). From time to time I read something that is based on sound science that I think should be passed along to everyone who cares about their health and the health of their loved ones. You never know when a small piece of information can plant a seed for a big positive change.

For the past year, study after study has been released demonstrating the critical importance of supplementing Vitamin D.  Anyone who does not take additional Vitamin D3 today, well, they simply are not reading the solid clinical studies.  The health effects of adding D3 to diets have been established for everyone from young children through seniors.

Heart failure linked to gene variant affecting vitamin D activation

Previous studies have shown a link between low vitamin D status and heart disease. Now a new study shows that patients with high blood pressure who possess a gene variant that affects an enzyme critical to normal vitamin D activation are twice as likely as those without the variant to have congestive heart failure (see also University of Michigan Health System).

"This study is the first indication of a genetic link between vitamin D action and heart disease," says Robert U. Simpson, professor of pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School and one of the authors of the study in the journal Pharmacogenomics.

"This study revealed that a critical enzyme absolutely required for production of the vitamin D hormone has a genetic variant associated with the development of congestive heart failure," Simpson says. "If subsequent studies confirm this finding and demonstrate a mechanism, this means that in the future, we may be able to screen earlier for those most vulnerable and slow the progress of the disease." Such a screening test would be years away.

Study co-authors Russel A. Wilke of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Catherine A. McCarthy of the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in Marshfield, Wis., analyzed the genetic profiles of 617 subjects from the Marshfield Clinic Personalized Medicine Project, a large DNA biobank. They looked for variants in five candidate genes chosen for their roles in vitamin D regulation and hypertension. One-third of the subjects had both hypertension and congestive heart failure, one-third had hypertension alone and one-third were included as healthy controls.

The results showed that a variant in the CYP27B1 gene was associated with congestive heart failure in patients with hypertension. It is already known that mutations that inactivate this gene reduce the required conversion of vitamin D into an active hormone.

"This initial study needs to be confirmed with a larger study that would permit analysis of the full cardiovascular profile of the population possessing the gene variant," Simpson says. A future study also would need to include people of more diverse origins than this study's population of mostly European ancestry, the authors say.

Working Your Abs ~By Sadie

Today we are going to talk about some additional ab exercises that can give your training program variety.

Leg Raises:  This exercise is as old as the sit up and works both the lower and upper and lower rectus abdominus and to a lesser extent the intercostals.  If you want more stress on the lower abs, use a flat bench.

How to do:

1. Lie on your back on an inclined ab board with your head toward the raised end.

2. Grasp the end of upper bench with your hands to stabilize your body.

3. Bend your leg 15-20 degrees or until you feel your back relax.

4. Use your abdominal muscles to raise your feet in an arc to a position directly above your head.

5. Drop your feet in a return arc until they clear the bench.

6. Repeat until the desired number of repetitions are complete.

7. Add resistance by raising the incline angle of the bench or by holding a light plate or dumbbell between your feet.

 

Side Bends:  This exercise can be done with or without dumbbells in your hands.  It works all the ab muscles however focus is placed on the obliques.

How to do:

1. Stand up straight and with your arms straight down at your sides.

2. Bend sideways holding your pelvis very firm. First one shoulder should bend down toward the floor.

3. When you reach a point where you cannot bend further, inhale, hold your breath and raise yourself back to the erect starting position exhaling when you reach the vertical position.

4. Repeat this movement numerous times before switching to the opposite shoulder.

 

Great Walls:  This is a simple yet highly effective ab exercise that works all the ab muscles but is focused more on the upper abs.

How to do:

1. Stand straight up.

2. Concentrate as hard as you can on your abs.

3. Tense your abs as hard as possible. Put all your energy into tensing your abs.

4. Maintain the incredible tension for a count of 6 and relax.

5. Immediately tense the abs again.

6. Continue this cycle until failure.

 

Iron Inch:  This is a simple, highly effective exercise that almost never used.  It is excellent for the lower ab region.

How to do:

1. Sit on the floor, legs together, stretched out in front of you.

2. Keep your back erect and clasp your hands behind your head.

3. Using the power of your abs and hips try to inch across the floor for a distance of 10 feet. Do not bend your knees or get your back or arms into the movement.

4. Using your lower abs move your right hip and then your left hip and inch. Continue until you reached 10 feet or cannot move further.

5. Rest 90 seconds and repeat this movement backwards to your starting spot.

6. After you have mastered this exercise place a weight in your lap for greater resistance.

There you have it.  More excellent exercises for the abs.   The important thing to know is that it doesn’t really matter what specific exercise you use to work your abs out on any particular day.  The most important thing is that you do something.  Normally, abs can stand more work than the average muscle.  I like to work on my abs 3-4 times a week for 10-15 minutes.  Start slow and build up to this and the result will be a beautiful set of abs.

 

Sit Ups: The old standard ab exercise is still a good one for many.

How to do:

1. Lie on your back on the floor and hook your toes under a heavy piece of 

furniture. Even better, use an ab board and hook your toes under the ankle 

constraints.

2. Bend your knee comfortably and keep them bent throughout the entire set. 

This helps to relieve concentrated back strain.

3. Place your hands behind your head and lock your fingers together.

4. Curl your head, shoulders, upper back and lower back slowly in succession 

off the floor until your torso is perpendicular to the floor.

5. Hold the upright position for a second and reverse the movement slowly 

until reaching the starting point.

6. Resistance may be added by varying the degree of incline if you are using an 

ab bench or by holding a weighed barbell plate behind your head. Advanced 

athletes may want to do both!

 

Twisting Sit Ups:  This is a variation on the popular sit-up.  This 

exercise will involve the intercostals and the obliques.

How to do:

1. Lie on your back on the floor and hook your toes under a heavy piece of 

furniture. Even better, use an ab board and hook your toes under the ankle 

constraints.

2. Bend your knee comfortably and keep them bent throughout the entire set. 

This helps to relieve concentrated back strain.

3. Place your hands behind your head and lock your fingers together.

4. Curl your head, shoulders, upper back and lower back slowly in succession 

off the floor until your torso is perpendicular to the floor.

5. Hold the upright position for a second and reverse the movement slowly 

until reaching the starting point.

6. Resistance may be added by varying the degree of incline if you are using an 

ab bench or by holding a weighed barbell plate behind your head. Advanced 

athletes may want to do both!

7. Do a second repetition however during this rep twist to the right as you raise

 yourself.

8. Do a third repetition twisting to the left.

9. Continue reps straight, right, left until the end of the set.

 

Cruches:  Crunches are the most popular exercise today.  They are great for 

working the larger ab muscles such as the rectus abdominis and the 

intercostals.

How to do:

1. Lie flat on your back and place your calves on a flat bench seat. Your 

hamstrings should be perpendicular to the floor.

2. Place your hands behind your head with fingers interlaced together.

3. Perform the following movements simultaneously:
a. Pull your hips from the floor using your lower abdominal muscles.
b. Raise your shoulders and back from the floor using your upper abdominal 

muscles

c. Force your shoulders in moving them toward your hips
d. Exhale hard
4. Hold the contracted position for a slow count of 1-3 seconds.
5. Keep repeating this movement until fatigued.

Reverse Crunches:  This is a fantastic exercise for the lower abs.

How to do:

1. Lie flat on your back with legs extended. Raise your legs into a L 

position with your abs. You can flex your knees a bit.

2. Lower them to almost floor level and raise again.

3. Keep going until failure.

These are the basic exercises.  Tomorrow I will give you a few less popular 

but great ab exercises to increase the variety in your workout.

Most everyone wants a slim waistline and what that means is that you 

need to begin to work harder on your abs.

What are the abdominal muscles?

The midsection of your body includes the rectus abdominous, 

serratus, internal and external obliques, psoas, linea alba, linea 

similunaris, linea transversae, transversalis and intercustals. The 

largest most apparent abdominal muscle group is the rectus 

abdominous. The rectus abdominous is a huge, flat muscle covering 

almost the entire front of your "stomach" area between the lower 

ribcage and your hips.

A second main set of muscles which comprise the "abs" are located 

at the sides of your waist. These muscles are referred to as the 

external obliques however they really consist of three separate 

muscle groups, the internal obliques, traverse obliques and the 

external obliques.

A final set of muscles which compose the "abs" are the incostals. 

The intercostals run diagonally down the sides of the upper end of 

your midsection right below the ribcage. These are normally the last 

muscles to appear to the naked eye, only visable in people who have 

taken the time to develop them properly.

 

Why do you need great abs?

First, abdominal muscles are important for freedom from lower back 

pain and injury. You may not be aware of the fact that many lower 

back problems come from poor ab development rather than from 

weak spinal errectors.

Second, great abs also look fantastic. One of the first spots 

someone's appraising eye falls on is your midsection. Great abs 

tell others straight off that you are fit and care about your health 

and personal appearance. Third, strong abs are a key to improving 

performance in many sports.

 How often should I train my abs?

The amount of abdominal training you need to do is dictated by 

what your specific goals are. If you are looking to flatten your 

tummy a little then you might be able to achieve that with 8-10 

minutes of work 2 or 3 times weekly.  If you are looking for that 

awesome, lean, six pack look then you had better be prepared to 

blast train your abs. If you think that you can achieve magazine 

type results with some "TV gizmo" or "infomercial whatchamacallit" 

you will be sadly disappointed. Great, rock hard abs can only be 

attained through hard, brutal ab workouts and proper nutrition.

 

I have heard too much ab work will widen my waistline.

Nonsense. It takes a massive amount of work to initially develop 

awesome abdominals. The last thing you need to be thinking about 

is backing off ab training.

You might find however, that weighted heavy side bends could 

rapidly enlarge your obliques. This may not be desirable initally 

depending on your particular genetics and current state of midsection 

development.

 

How do I know I'm training my abs correctly?

You should feel a deep satisfying "burn" in each muscle group during 

every set.Further, after each abs session your muscles should look 

and feel pumped much the same as other muscle groups.

Are some ab exercises better than others?

Certainly, some exercises are better than others; however, we believe 

that everyone should experiment with different exercises to see which 

ones work best for them. The key is mental concentration. Research 

has demonstrated that muscle fiber recruitment is dictated most 

specifically by what area of the abs you are thinking about during ab 

training. For example, a set of crunches will recruit more upper ab 

fibers if you think about upper abs while the same set will recruit 

more lower ab fibers if you concentrate mentally on your lower abs.

 

I heard "lower" ab work is useless since the "lower" abs don't 

really exist?

There is a huge debate in fitness as to whether "lower" abs exist. 

The debate is really foolish; "lower" abs definitely exist. In fact, 

aside from obvious functional differences between upper and lower 

abs, the ab muscles below the navel are stimulated by a completely 

different set of those originating from the region of the first lumbar 

vertebra. If the evidence is good enough for neurologists and 

kinesthislogists, then it is good enough for us.

 

Will ab work improve my posture?

Ab work can improve posture but if you do not achieve a balance 

of work between the "upper" and "lower" abs your posture may 

actually worsen. For example if your "upper" abs strengthen 

compared to the lower abs the pull of the hip flexors will increase

Achieving Better Health by Chuck Stebbins

Yesterday I promised that I would have an answer as to why our collective health was deteriorated simultaneous to a growth in knowledge about better health and an increase in good health practices.

The answer to this is simple.  In order to actually ACHIEVE better health, people need to take a fully integrative approach blending proper eating, good supplementation and exercise together as cornerstones to a better, more healthy tomorrow.  And this is simply not be done.

Knowing more does not insure us as a group doing more.  Recently I asked a well respected oncologist friend of mine, Dr. Mike Anderson of Las Vegas what he thought about nutrition and supplementation for patients he saw in his normal practice…here is his response.

I think nutrition and supplements can work complimentary with Chemo and Radiation. Patients who take better care of themselves and eat a healthy organic diet generally have a better outcome and have less toxicity from Chemotherapy and Radiation. At least that is what I've seen in my practice. I think incorporating a good nutrition plan into the treatment works best. Building back the cellular structure is the way to recover quicker from the toxicity of treatment, the best way to do that is nutrition, so I think there is something to it of course.  The problem is most patients I see have not taken good care of themselves and eat a poor diet (maybe why they got into their predicament in the first place) it then becomes difficult to instill a good nutrition plan during treatment when they never had one during their life.

What this says to me is that while surveys say that people know more, they are not practicing it.  In other words, knowing that a sedentary lifestyle and overeating leads to heart problems and taking a couple Omega 3’s a day is not sufficient in and of itself to divert the probability of heart disease.  Eating properly and losing weight, taking Omerga 3’s and exercising is an integrative approach that works!

Knowing is not doing and doing a little in not enough.  When America adopts an integrative approach to health then the education that we receive through the Internet and other media will actually begin to have a real purposeful outcome.

The results of a large very recent survey from the research group Health Focus International finds that people are actually moving towards incorporating more healthy foods and supplement products into their daily lives.  In other words, we are trending toward wanting to actually take more steps to increase our personal health.

Somewhat paradoxically, despite the continued swing to increased concern with healthy diet and about one’s health, the state of health in the US is declining according to the United Health Foundation’s America’s Health Ranking. This has been the case for the past four years after improving for the previous 15 years.

It noted that one of the measures of the state of health – obesity – had risen from 11.6 percent in 1990 to 26.3 percent.
