Denim is Always in Style. ~By Sadie

Most everyone wants to be on the cutting edge of the fashion trends.   Denim is always hot so I went through all the top fashion magazines and viewed all the top runway shows worldwide to find out what is going to be hot in denim this coming year. 

The first most noticeable trend was a continuation of last year’s ripped look only this season it got much more dramatic with more larger tears located all over the garments.  And the trend that started with jeans last year has grown to include skirts and just about anything made from denim.  Some of the denim shown was shocking in the absence of material and the presence of gaping holes.

The new trend in denim was the return of…..patches.  There were patches everywhere.   Patched legs were very popular as were patched pockets.  It didn’t appear that patches where going to be as popular as denim that appeared to be nearly torn off the body but it’s a strong alternative to showing all that skin if you are modest.

The good news is that those baggy boyfriend jeans that were popularized by Hollywood last year have disappeared.  There are boyfriend blazers now which are not nearly as sloppy looking and far more pleasing to the eye.

One final note is that colors seemed to be out.  The flash in denim this season will be with crystal embellishments and nail heads. 

Overall, it appears to be a great year for denim.

Warmer clothing for the Winter Season ~by Sadie

The past week has reminded me that we are actually in the winter season.  I had to wear a jacket this week in Florida!  But what is the rest of the world wearing for winter outerwear?

The truth is that this year the designers showed a lot of solid, dark colors.  Blacks, Dark Blues, Deep Plums and Charcoal Grays were the norm.   Style wise, they varied but most of them were belted in some manner.  As far as length goes, they seemed to be a little shorter than the norm, many ending at the hip or above the knee.  And wool rules the most.

There were exceptions to this winter coat rule with some bright, short plaid cloth coats and a few bright variants but this season, dark is in.  Leather also seems to be yesterday’s look, although we all know leather is always in style.  The good news is that your closet is likely to yield a coat or two from the past that seems somehow back in fashion this year.

Yesterday’s blog was so popular among readers that I chose to add to the 

theme and even incorporate some of your tips.  The idea here is to always 

work to increase the vertical look of your fashion.  Here are some ways of 

best achieving this:

1.    Choose darker colors such as navy, black or charcoal gray.

        2.     Prints should be scaled for your body; the larger the better.  In 

                general, it's the space between prints that makes them unflattering, 

                so look for prints that have larger, overlapping images.

        3.    Use undergarment foundations such as shapers or control top 

                pantyhose.

        4.    Play up your best features; for example , showing off shapely legs 

               with a knee-length skirt.

        5.    Choose fabrics that are not bulky and ones that do not cling.  Don't 

               think that baggy clothes make you look slimmer.   Sensible clothes 

               that hint at your curves, without being clingy or tight, can actually be 

               the most flattering.

        6.   Use accessories which draw attention to your face such as scarves, 

               hats, earrings, etc.

      7.     Make sure you scale your accessories  to your size.   Curvaceous women 

              and tiny handbags or earrings don’t mix well.

       8.     Add small shoulder pads to sweaters and other knit tops to make 

               them hang better on your body.

      9.     Choose clothing without oversized embellishments or huge buttons.

Rhodium is a rare, silvery, white, hard transition metal that is related to platinum.  It is one of the most expensive precious metals known.  Rhodium often finds its way into finely made jewelry.  It is often electroplated on white gold and platinum to give it a reflective white surface. This is known as rhodium flashing in the jewelry business.  It also may be used in coating sterling silver in order to protect it from tarnish, which normally occurs from hydrogen sulfide in the atmosphere reacting to the silver.

When it comes to silver jewelry, tarnishing is a natural process and can easily be removed with a one of a number very inexpensive anti tarnish polishes or washes.  The only way tarnishing does not happen with pure sterling silver is if it is rhodium plated.

Fashion Trends for the Season ~by Sadie

It seems that recently I have been neglecting my jewelry.  I have not gotten much new so I thought I needed a refresher course on what was in for the Big 2010.  I spent a few hours yesterday looking at a few of the prominent runway shows on-line, scanned a few of the better fashion magazines and checked out the Pantone Jewelry Color Chart for Winter Fashion 2010.  

Here are the winning jewelry trends for Winter 2009-2010.

First, big and bold is a prominent look.  I saw a trend toward very unusual and highly dramatic necklaces.  Mega cuff bracelets with monster sized stones.  Cocktail rings that seemed more stone than ring.  And very large, hoop earrings.
